is to be unreservedly present
when you are listening with another.

I watched a waitress do this
at a table next to ours today
and instantly I saw her and her patron
bathed in Heaven.

I refrained from getting up
and hugging the waitress,
but just barely.

Does she know
the beatific magnitude of this gift?
She is feeding her customers’ soul
as well as their bodies.

No matter.
She clearly fed mine.

The simplest gift says
“In this moment I see you,
and I am giving you my undivided attention.”

It is entirely possible
that this could be the first time in years
that the person has received this gift.

Will you join me in following her lead?
